Conducción nocturna y faros delanteros
- Headlights are required from a half hour after sunset to a half hour before sunrise.
- Use high beams on open roads without streetlights whenever there is no oncoming traffic. Dim them within 500 feet of an oncoming vehicle and within 300 feet of a vehicle you are following.
- Drive slowly enough to stop within your headlights' reach (usually about 400 feet). Do not look directly into oncoming headlights: if high beams glare, keep your eyes searching the road ahead of your vehicle, toward the right edge.
- Do not wear sunglasses or tinted or colored lenses at night or on overcast days: they reduce your vision.
- At night, look beyond your headlight beams for dark shapes and shadows, and glance to the sides now and then to find the pavement edge. Increase following distance at night and on unfamiliar roads.
- Turn on headlights in rain, snow, fog or smoke, even in daytime. Daytime running lights are dimmer than headlights and do not turn on your taillights.
- Headlights help you see, and they help others see you, which is a reason to use them even on a bright day.
Easy to mix up易混淆Fácil de confundir
- 500 feet = oncoming vehicle; 300 feet = vehicle you are following. The following distance is the shorter one.500英尺 = 对向车辆;300英尺 = 您跟随的车辆。

“Avoid looking directly into oncoming headlights. Keep your eyes searching the road in front of your vehicle.”Slippery roads, skids and curves湿滑路面、打滑与弯道Caminos resbalosos, derrapes y curvas
- The first few minutes of rain after hot weather are especially slippery: heat brings oil in the asphalt to the surface, and the road stays slick until the oil washes away. Bridges and overpasses can be icy when the rest of the road is not.
- Hydroplaning is water building up between the tires and the road so the tires lose traction; the car may feel like it is floating or sliding. The best prevention is to slow down on wet roads. If it happens, take your foot off the accelerator, press the brakes gently (without ABS, stomping the brake can make it worse), keep the steering wheel steady and look where you want to go while the tires regain grip.
- Slippery road: adjust to conditions, even below the posted limit. Snow needs a much larger following distance and a dramatically lower speed. Use snow tires or chains when required; chains or studded tires improve winter traction.
- Ice hides in shady spots on cold wet days and as black ice near freezing. When temperatures rise from below freezing to near freezing, melting ice makes the road more slippery, not less.
- Skid: take your foot off the gas, then press or pump the brakes; without ABS, stomping the brake can make the skid worse. ABS controls wheel rotation during braking and lets you keep steering. Steer in the direction the vehicle is moving and keep correcting the wheel until the tires regain traction and go where you steer. Then assess the road conditions and adjust how you drive.
- Curves: slow down before the curve, not in it, and position slightly to the outside of your lane for more room and a better view. In the curve keep a steady speed and steer smoothly; accelerate gently only as you exit.
- Black ice causes many loss-of-control crashes because you cannot see it. Avoid icy roads when you can; if you must drive on them, slow down and leave extra space all around.
- Approaching a curve, look ahead to judge how sharp and long it is, then pick your speed. Rain, snow or ice cuts friction in curves, so slow even more and avoid sudden moves. Downhill curves may need more braking; uphill curves may need more throttle. Check your mirrors as you exit.
- Following a motorcycle on snow or a slick road: the usual minimum of two vehicle lengths is not enough. Leave a lot more room than for a car and dramatically reduce speed.
- A yellow curve sign with a speed plate (for example 35 under a curve arrow) tells you to slow to that speed before the curve, not in it.
