School buses校车Autobuses escolares
- Red lights flashing and stop sign out: drivers behind the bus must stop, including drivers in turn lanes. Never pass the bus, even if you see no children and the other lane is empty, and never pass using a center turn lane.
- On a two-lane road, traffic in both directions stops.
- Oncoming traffic need not stop when the road has three or more lanes or the directions are separated by a median or barrier (see the source note).
- Go only after the lights stop, the sign folds in and the arm returns to the bumper. Fines are doubled for passing a stopped school bus.
- School bus lights work like traffic signals: red means stop, yellow means caution and slow down.
- Keep watching for children after the red lights stop. They may still be near the road.
Easy to mix up易混淆Fácil de confundir
- The guide lists "three or more lanes" and "separated by a median or barrier" as bullets; state law (RCW 46.61.370) treats either condition as enough. Practice questions use cases where both readings agree.

“You can resume traveling in the opposite direction when the lights stop flashing, the sign is retracted, and the metal arm returns to the front bumper of the bus.”Bicycles and motorcycles自行车与摩托车Bicicletas y motocicletas
- Pass a bicyclist only when safe, on the left, with at least 3 feet of clearance. With two lanes your way, move over a full lane. With one lane each way, wait until there is no oncoming traffic, then move into the other lane; never pass into oncoming traffic. Pass slowly and return only when you are fully clear of the bicyclist.
- A bicyclist in a crosswalk is treated as a pedestrian. Drive in a bike lane only to turn or to reach the curb to park.
- A motorcycle is entitled to a full lane; never share the lane beside one.
- You cannot share a lane with a bicyclist. Bicyclists may legally use the full lane and ride where they are most visible.
- At intersections, yield to a bicyclist as you would to a vehicle. Let a bicyclist clear the intersection before you turn; never pass a bicyclist just before a right turn.
- Turning a corner or into a driveway, watch for bicyclists on the sidewalk or in the crosswalk. Where bike-lane paint is interrupted, drive as if the markings continue.
- Following a motorcycle, leave a lot of room to stop, and even more in rain or on slick roads. Motorcyclists may slow with the throttle, so you may see no brake light.
- Gravel, debris, pavement seams, potholes and manhole covers can make a motorcyclist change speed or lane position. Some motorcycle turn signals do not cancel automatically, so do not assume the rider will turn.
- Before turning left, do not misjudge an oncoming motorcycle's speed. Before turning right, look left, right, then left again, with an over-the-shoulder check of your blind zone.

“Do an over-the-shoulder check to make sure your blind zone is clear. For example, if you are turning right, look left, look right, then look left again. Looking twice can save a life.”Trucks, trains and emergency vehicles大货车、火车与应急车辆Camiones, trenes y vehículos de emergencia
- If you cannot see a truck driver's mirrors, the driver cannot see you. Merge in front only when both headlights are visible in your mirror.
- A loaded truck at 55 mph needs about 450 feet to stop.
- At railroad crossings with active signals, a lowering gate, a flagger, or an approaching train, stop 15-50 feet from the nearest rail. Stop even if the gate is up, and never go around it.
- For a siren or emergency lights, pull to the right and stop until the vehicle has passed, then signal and rejoin traffic in the same order you were traveling before. Yield to transit buses signaling to re-enter traffic.
- Following a large vehicle, drop back far enough to see a wide view of the road ahead. Never pass a large vehicle while it is turning; the driver may swing wide.
- On steep roads large trucks go slowly; expect slow vehicles in the right lane. Avoid driving near trucks placarded for hazardous materials when you can.
- Do not follow a snowplow closely: thrown snow can create blizzard-like conditions and cut your visibility.
- Trains always have the right-of-way because a train can take up to a mile to stop. Flashing red lights at a crossing mean a train is coming: stay outside the gates. Go only when the lights stop and all other warnings turn off.
- Trust the signals even if you see no train: trains can be closer, quieter and faster than they look, and can come from either direction on any track.
- Never stop on the tracks. If traffic ahead is backed up, wait before the tracks until your whole car can clear them.
- If your car is stuck on a crossing, get everyone out at once. Then call the number on the blue and white Emergency Notification System sign with the crossing ID, or 911 if there is no sign. Use the same sign to report anything on or near the tracks.
- Light rail runs on city streets: leave at least one car length between you and a light rail train, and never stop, park or leave your car on the tracks.
Easy to mix up易混淆Fácil de confundir
- Rail crossing stop distance is 15-50 feet from the nearest rail. Do not confuse it with 15 feet (hydrant parking) or 50 feet (no parking near a crossing).
