School, work and emergency zones学校区、施工区与应急区Zonas escolares, de obras y de emergencia
Special speed rules and duties near schools, road work and roadside emergencies.
Slowing down where people work and walk在有人工作和行走的地方减速
- A school zone is the roads around a school building or playground. It can be marked with signs, pavement markings and flashing lights. The school zone speed limit is 20 mph when the signs say it applies, for example when the beacons flash.
- Always slow down in a work zone, even with no workers visible. Fines double when workers are present.
- For a roadside response vehicle with flashing lights (tow trucks, garbage trucks, incident response, highway maintenance, utility vehicles, police, fire trucks and ambulances), the guide gives two options: move over into a farther lane, or slow to at least 10 mph below the posted limit. The zone runs 200 feet before and after the scene. A scene may also have flares or signs, but the response vehicles will be using flashing lights, so watch for those. Whether moving over alone is enough is not settled; see the note below.
- Even after school hours, slow down and watch near a school. Students may be at activities or on the playground.
- In a work zone: cut distractions (turn down music, pause conversations), increase following distance, and be ready to stop. Move over when you can to give workers and construction vehicles room.
- You must yield to work zone personnel, equipment and vehicles with flashing yellow lights inside the zone. Use extreme caution at night whether or not you see workers. Keep following work zone signs until you see END ROAD WORK.
Easy to mix up易混淆Fácil de confundir
- The guide also says never exceed 50 mph in an emergency zone; state law (RCW 46.61.212) ties the 50 mph cap to roads posted above 60 mph. We do not test that detail until it is reconciled.
- Emergency zone = 200 feet before and after the scene. Do not mix it up with 100 feet (signal before a turn), 15-50 feet (rail crossing stop) or 500 feet (dim high beams for oncoming traffic).
- Work zone fines double only when workers are present, but you must slow down in every work zone, workers or not.
