Semáforos y señales de tránsito
What each light means, what to do when signals fail, and how sign colors and shapes tell you the kind of message.
Leer los semáforos
- Solid red: stop. Wait for green and for the intersection to be clear of vehicles and pedestrians before moving. After a full stop you may turn right, or left onto a one-way street, unless a "no turn on red" sign says otherwise and only with room to enter traffic.
- Flashing red works like a stop sign. Flashing yellow works like a yield sign.
- Solid yellow before you reach the intersection: slow down and prepare to stop; the light is about to turn red. If you are already in the intersection, keep going at the posted speed. Never speed up past the limit to beat the red.
- Washington does not use flashing green lights. Freeway ramp meters work like ordinary signals: stop at the white line on red. Washington no usa luces verdes intermitentes.
- Solid green: go, but first wait for the intersection to clear, yield to pedestrians, and yield to emergency vehicles. On a solid green without an arrow, a left turn must yield to oncoming traffic.
- A red arrow means stop: you may not go in the direction of the arrow.
- A yellow arrow means the arrow is about to turn red. Prepare to stop and give the right-of-way to oncoming traffic.
- A green arrow is a protected turn and gives you the right-of-way in that direction: oncoming traffic, crossing traffic and pedestrians should all be stopped while it is lit.
Easy to mix up易混淆Fácil de confundir
- Flashing red and flashing yellow are easy to mix up: red = stop first, yellow = yield.
- Green arrow vs. plain green light: the arrow protects your turn; a round green light does not. On round green, a left turn still yields.

“Look left and yield to all traffic already in the roundabout since they have the right-of-way.”Regulatory signs: speed, lanes and direction管制标志:车速、车道与方向Señales reglamentarias: velocidad, carriles y dirección
- Speed limit signs give the maximum speed allowed. The maximum is for ideal conditions; slow down when conditions are worse. On some roads a MINIMUM SPEED sign gives the minimum speed required: you must drive at least that fast so you are not a hazard to others.
- REDUCED SPEED AHEAD warns that a lower speed limit is posted ahead. Be ready to slow down to it.“REDUCED SPEED AHEAD”(前方降低限速)表示前方将有更低的限速,准备减速。
- Digital variable speed signs change the limit to smooth traffic. Overhead lane signs can also close a lane. You must obey all signs, signals and markings.
- ONE WAY: traffic flows only in the direction of the arrow. Never drive the wrong way on a one-way street.“ONE WAY”(单行道): 车流只能朝箭头方向行驶。
- KEEP RIGHT reminds you to stay in the right lane unless you are passing.“KEEP RIGHT”(靠右行驶)提醒您除超车外保持在右侧车道。
- NO TURN ON RED: wait for the green light before turning. Other white signs with lane arrows are also regulatory: they tell you what that lane must do.“NO TURN ON RED”(红灯禁止转弯): 等绿灯后再转弯。
- A center-lane sign (arrows pointing both ways, ONLY) marks a lane reserved for left turns from either direction. It is not for through traffic or passing.
- The NO PASSING ZONE sign marks where passing is not allowed, often at hills, curves and intersections and other places where a vehicle could enter the road.“NO PASSING ZONE”(禁止超车区)标志标示不允许超车的区域,常见于坡道、弯道、路口以及其他可能有车辆驶入道路的地方。
- Automated traffic cameras are clearly marked. They record running a steady red light, not stopping at a railroad crossing signal, and speeding in a school zone. Speeding tickets from these cameras are mailed to the vehicle owner.
Easy to mix up易混淆Fácil de confundir
- SPEED LIMIT (white, regulatory) is a law. A yellow speed plaque under a warning sign is advice for a curve, not the legal limit.
