Driving for conditions, merging onto freeways and the basic lane discipline rules.
Velocidad según las condiciones
- A speed limit is the maximum for ideal conditions: Washington law lets you drive below the limit but never above it, and it requires a speed that is safe for current conditions. When conditions are poor, slow down; you can be ticketed for going too fast for conditions even below the limit.
- Keep a space of at least twice your vehicle's length to the vehicle ahead when driving near other vehicles.
- Reduce speed at sharp curves and hills with limited view, on slippery roads, near pedestrians, children, cyclists or animals, in parking lots and shopping areas, in heavy traffic, at narrow bridges and tunnels, and in residential areas.
- You use three types of vision while driving. Central vision shows detail straight ahead; peripheral vision shows the sides. Higher speeds reduce the quality of all of them.
- Eye-lead time: scan as far ahead as you can see, to the sides, and behind with your mirrors. It gives you time to see, analyze and respond to hazards.
- If you need to stop, do not block a travel lane. Keep moving until you can safely pull over. For a true emergency stop, turn on your hazard lights.
- Excessive speed makes seat belts less effective, lengthens stopping distance, leaves less time to scan for hazards, and reduces vehicle and traction control, especially in rain or snow.
- Space around your vehicle lowers your risk and gives you time to find an alternative path if you need one. Count-seconds exercise: pick a marker you think is 15 seconds ahead, then count until you reach it to sharpen your distance judgment.
- Some roads post a minimum speed. You must drive at least that fast so you are not a hazard to other drivers.

“These signs tell you the maximum safe speed allowed or the minimum safe speed required.”Freeways and merging高速公路与汇入Autopistas e incorporación
- Traffic already on the interstate has the right-of-way. Use the whole on-ramp, your signal and your mirrors, and adjust your speed to fit a gap big enough that no one has to swerve, slow or stop. Never force your way into a gap that is too small: if the driver ahead has to slow or stop, you are in danger, so wait for a bigger gap.
- At a lane closure in slow traffic, use both lanes to the merge point and take turns, one car from each lane (zipper merge).
- Keep right except to pass; the speed limit still applies in the left lane while you pass. Never pass on the shoulder, and do not drive on it unless officials or signs direct you there.
- Zipper merge: if you are in the lane that stays open, be courteous: let one vehicle from the ending lane in ahead of you, then go. Everyone alternates like zipper teeth.
- If you miss your exit, never back up on the freeway or shoulder: continue to the next exit. It is illegal to drive on, over or across a median.
- Hitchhiking or picking up hitchhikers on Washington freeways is illegal and dangerous.
- Why zipper merge? It makes a predictable merging pattern that reduces sudden-lane-change collisions, improves traffic flow by about 60 percent, spares everyone one long line in a single lane, and removes the urge to cut in.
Easy to mix up易混淆Fácil de confundir
- Zipper merge means merging late, at the merge point, not early. Merging early is what creates the long single line.

“Be courteous. Allow one vehicle from the ending lane to merge in front of you, then merge into the open lane.”Hazards and the hazard management routine危险与危险管理惯例
- A hazard is anything that requires you to make a change. It can be urgent, like a child running into the road, or minor, like a speed limit sign or the turn into your driveway.
- After you spot a hazard, check behind you. Drivers behind you may be the most affected by what you do next.
- The routine has five steps: plan, communicate, check, execute, evaluate.
- Plan: scan around you, including the rearview mirror, and decide whether the change is safe. Communicate: signal so others know your intention.
- Check: set your position and speed so you need no more than medium braking, recheck mirrors, look over your shoulder for pedestrians and bicyclists, and make sure no one else is moving into the same space.
- Turning across oncoming traffic: it has the right-of-way. You need time to finish the turn and reach traffic speed, so if you are unsure, wait. Too much time is better than too little.
