Which lane to turn into, when U-turns are allowed, and what each line color and pattern means.
Giros y giros en U
- Turn into the lane closest to the direction you came from. With more than one turn lane, stay in your original lane through the turn. Change lanes only after the turn is complete.
- Signal at least 100 feet before turning or changing lanes. Make a habit of signaling before every change of direction, even with no one in sight, and make sure the signal stops blinking after the turn.
- U-turns are generally allowed unless a sign forbids them, but they need clear visibility in all directions: never on a curve or near the crest of a hill, where you cannot see clearly.
- Before turning, check behind you for bicyclists and yield to them. Check the street you are turning onto for vehicles, pedestrians and bicyclists in or near your path.
- Once you are in a turn lane you must make that turn. Fix your route afterwards in a safe place.
- Stop lines: at a stop sign or signal, stop before your vehicle reaches the stop line or the crosswalk.
- Turning left on a solid green: yield to oncoming traffic; it has the right-of-way.

“When you’re turning left at a green light, yield to approaching vehicles. Oncoming traffic has the right-of-way.”Lines on the road道路标线Las líneas del camino
- Yellow lines separate opposite directions; white lines separate lanes going the same way.
- Double solid white: do not cross. Double solid yellow: no passing in either direction.
- Dashed yellow center line on a two-lane road: you may use the oncoming lane to pass when safe. Solid yellow line: do not cross it to pass. Solid plus dashed yellow: you may pass only if the dashed line is on your side and it is safe.
- Shared center left-turn lanes are for left turns (and permitted U-turns) only, never for passing, and you should not travel more than 300 feet in one.
- Dashed white line: you may cross it to change lanes when safe. Solid white line: stay in your lane unless a special situation requires a change.
- Shorter, closer white dashes mean your lane is ending. Merge or exit.
- You may cross the solid yellow line on your side to enter a shared center left-turn lane. Drivers from the other direction may use the same lane, so watch for them.
- A wide yellow striped area down the middle is a median. It is illegal to drive within, over or across a median.
- No markings at all: keep as close to the right side as you safely can.
- Red stripes or a red curb mark a fire lane. Do not park or even stop there.
Easy to mix up易混淆Fácil de confundir
- The solid/dashed rule depends on which line is closer to YOUR lane.
- Solid yellow vs. solid white: both say stay in your lane, but yellow separates opposite directions. Never cross a solid yellow line to pass; you may cross the one on your side to enter a shared center turn lane.
- Short white dashes mean a lane is ending. They are not school zone markings; school zones are marked with their own signs, pavement markings and flashing lights.
